* BAIJI – A suicide bomber killed 15 people and wounded 10 when he blew himself up among mourners at a funeral for a tribal leader in a village near the northern oil refinery city of Baiji, security officials said.

QAIYARA – Two people were killed and nine wounded by a bomb in a parked car targeting an Iraqi army patrol in the town of Qaiyara near Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD – U.S. forces killed two gunmen and arrested 18 others during operations in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD – Iraqi special forces soldiers, backed by U.S. advisers, killed the suspected commander of 10 extremist groups implicated in attacks against Iraqi security forces and civilians in Baghdad, the U.S. military said. The man tried to grab a weapon when special forces entered a building in southwestern Baghdad’s al-Amil district, it said. The man’s son and neighbors said the man was shot when he tried to stop the soldiers from entering his wife’s bedroom.

NEAR FALLUJA – Gunmen killed four members of a U.S.-backed neighborhood police patrol and wounded two others in an attack on a checkpoint near Falluja, 50 km (30 miles) west of Baghdad, police said. Two of the gunmen were killed when police at the checkpoint returned fire.

BAGHDAD – Three people were wounded by a roadside bomb which exploded after a U.S. patrol went by in eastern Baghdad’s Baladiyat district, police said.

BAGHDAD – Two bodies were found in different areas of Baghdad on Sunday, police said.

ANBAR PROVINCE – A U.S. Marine was killed during combat operations in western Anbar province on Saturday, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD – One U.S. soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in Arab Jabour on Baghdad’s southern outskirts, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD – U.S. military aircraft hit more than 30 targets with 35 bombs weighing a total of 19,000 pounds in air strikes in Arab Jabour, the U.S. military said.

* NEAR NAJAF – Iraqi security forces have arrested 45 gunmen from the Shi’ite “Soldiers of Heaven” cult in the last three days in the provinces of Basra, Nassiriya and Najaf, a Najaf provincial spokesman said.

* BAGHDAD – The U.S. military said the final death toll in multiple truck bombings targeting Iraq’s minority Yazidi sect in northern Iraq last August was 796.

* FALLUJA – A suicide bomber killed six people in a town south of Falluja where people were celebrating the release of a man from U.S. military custody, local officials said. The bomber walked into the man’s house and blew himself up.

MOSUL – Police said they shot dead the driver of a car rigged with explosives during an attempted attack on a police checkpoint in eastern Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad. The car detonated, wounding two people.

BAGHDAD – Iraqi soldiers killed eight gunmen and arrested 54 others during the last 24 hours across Iraq, the Defence Ministry said.

BALAD – Five people were killed and 20 were wounded when mortar bombs hit Shi’ites observing Ashura rituals in Balad, 80 km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, on Saturday, police said.

BAGHDAD – U.S. forces detained 16 gunmen on Friday and Saturday during operations targeting al Qaeda in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. military said.

DIYALA PROVINCE – The U.S. military detained 10 gunmen during a raid in northern Diyala province on Thursday, the U.S. military said.

* RAMADI – Six policemen were killed and 13 wounded when two suicide bombers attacked policemen assembled for evening roll-call at a police station in the town of Albu Ubaid west of Ramadi, police said.

* BAGHDAD – Two people were killed and 10 wounded when a bomb hidden inside a plastic bag exploded outside a restaurant in Baghdad’s Sadr City district, police said.

* BAGHDAD – Two bodies were found dumped around Baghdad, police said.

TAL AFAR – Seven Shi’ites returning from Ashura ceremonies were killed in a Katyusha rocket attack in Tal Afar, 420 km (260 miles) northwest of Baghdad, police Brigadier General Najim Abdullah said. Another 17 were wounded and women and children were among the casualties.

BAGHDAD – Unidentified gunmen surrounded a Shi’ite mosque which Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffaq al-Rubaie was visiting in northwestern Baghdad’s Shula district on Friday, the Interior Ministry said. Interior Ministry security forces safely escorted Rubaie out of the mosque several hours later.

HILLA – Police detained 26 members of the Shi’ite “Soldiers of Heaven” cult in a pre-dawn raid on a house in Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, police said. Sporadic fighting continued between members of the cult and Iraqi security forces in the southern cities of Basra and Nassiriya but there was no information on fresh casualties.

KIRKUK – A bomb hidden inside a trash can killed two Shi’ite Ashura pilgrims and wounded seven others in Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

KIRKUK – Two militants were killed in Kirkuk when a roadside bomb they were trying to bury exploded, police said.

FALLUJA – Police found two bodies with gunshot wounds near Falluja, 50 km (30 miles) west of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD – One U.S soldier was killed on Friday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle during operations north of Baghdad, the U.S military said in a statement.

SHIRQAT – The most wanted al Qaeda leader in Salahuddin province was killed on Jan. 16 by U.S. troops and Iraqi police in Shirqat, 300 km (190 miles) north of Baghdad, the U.S military said.

BASRA – Dozens of people were killed and scores wounded in battles between Iraqi security forces and gunmen from the so-called “Soldiers of Heaven” Shi’ite cult in the southern cities of Basra and Nassiriya, security and hospital officials said. Among the dead in Nassiriya was a police major-general.

BAGHDAD – A woman and a child were killed when a roadside bomb targeting a U.S. patrol exploded in northeastern Baghdad’s Ur district, police said.

RIYADH – U.S. troops backed by aircraft killed 13 suspected militants during operations targeting al Qaeda in central and northern Iraq on Thursday and Friday, the U.S. military said. Iraqi police said seven bodies were found after one air strike in the town of Riyadh, 60 km (35 miles) southwest of Kirkuk.

BAQUBA – Two policemen were killed and two wounded when a bomb exploded in a house they were searching in Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

BAQUBA – Two children were killed and four people were wounded when another booby-trapped house exploded in Baquba.

BAQUBA – Two policemen were killed and two wounded when gunmen attacked a police patrol in al-Wejaiheiah east of Baquba, police said.

* BAQUBA – A suicide bomber wearing a vest packed with explosives killed nine people and wounded 14 others near a Shi’ite mosque in the volatile Iraqi city of Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

* JALAWLA – U.S. soldiers killed six people, including two women, during raids against al Qaeda near the town of Jalawla, 120 km (70 miles) northeast of Baghdad in Diyala province, the U.S. military said. Ground troops and support aircraft returned fire on a building in Jalawla, killing three suspected al Qaeda fighters. The bodies of two women were found inside the building along with another two women who were wounded. In a separate raid nearby, U.S. forces killed a man who ignored warning shots when he emerged from another building, the military said.

* BAGHDAD – Three bodies were found in different areas of Baghdad on Thursday, police said.

MOSUL – A policeman and a girl were injured when a car bomb exploded in front of a church in Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said. The front of the church was badly damaged.

MOSUL – Militants bombed an empty primary school in the west of Mosul, police said. No one was hurt in the attack.

BAGHDAD – The bodies of five people were found in different districts of Baghdad on Wednesday, police said.

SALAHUDDIN PROVINCE – Three U.S. soldiers were killed and two wounded by small arms fire during operations in Iraq’s northern Salahuddin province on Wednesday, the U.S. military said.

MOSUL – U.S. and Iraqi forces killed seven insurgents loading a vehicle with weapons in Mosul, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD – U.S. forces killed three insurgents and detained nine suspected militants on Tuesday and Wednesday during operations targeting al Qaeda in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. military said.

SULAIMAN PEK – An insurgent was killed on Wednesday while he was trying to rig a car with explosives in the town of Sulaiman Pek, 160 km (100 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

* ARAB JABOUR – U.S. forces launched their biggest air strikes in at least a year, dropping 40,000 pounds of bombs within minutes on al Qaeda targets in date palm groves on Baghdad’s southern outskirts, the U.S. military said.

* BAGHDAD – U.S. forces described strikes throughout central and northern Iraq as part of an offensive launched this week called Operation Phantom Phoenix. They said they had killed at least five militants and captured at least 18 suspects.

* BAGHDAD – A car bomb in eastern Baghdad’s Palestine Street neighborhood killed one person and wounded four, police said. Seven shops were destroyed.

BAGHDAD – Two Iraqis were killed and 10 wounded, all from the police and army, when a roadside bomb detonated after they arrived at a small road in central Baghdad where an earlier bomb had blown up inside an abandoned car, police said. The earlier explosion did not harm anyone.

BAGHDAD – Iraqi security forces found the bodies of three people with gunshot wounds across Baghdad on Wednesday, police said.

SINJAR – Two roadside bombs killed a policeman and wounded two others in an attack targeting a police patrol in the northern town of Sinjar, near the Syrian border, police said.

MADAEN – A roadside bomb wounded five civilians as they were walking past a hospital in the town of Madaen, 45 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD – Security forces found three bodies throughout Baghdad on Friday, police said.

ISKANDARIYA – Police said they found the body of a guard who works for the minister of state for national security in the town of Iskandariya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, on Friday.

Following are security developments in Iraq at 3:30 a.m. EST on Friday.

BASRA – A suspected roadside bomb exploded next to a British military armored vehicle east of Basra International Airport, where British forces in Iraq are based, but there were no casualties from the blast, a British military official said.

BAGHDAD – The bodies of two people were found across Baghdad on Thursday, police said.

BAQUBA – Gunmen killed two members of an anti-al Qaeda force and a policeman late on Thursday when they attacked a joint patrol of police and members of a local neighborhood watch in the city of Baquba, 40 miles north of Baghdad, police said.
